THE ROBERT BECK MEMORIAL CINEMA PRESENTS DECEMBER 2000

5 December - IN THE KINGDOM OF THE SHADOWS
In tonight's metaphysical double feature we pair Zoe Beloff's brand-new 3D 16mm film SHADOWLAND OR LIGHT FROM THE OTHER SIDE with one of its progenitors: episode two of Louis Feuillade's FANTOMAS. "My on-going project is an investigation into the relationship between imagination and moving image technology. SHADOWLAND OR LIGHT FROM THE OTHER SIDE is based on the 1897 autobiography of Elizabeth d'Espérance, a materializing medium who could produce full body apparitions. It shows how one might think of a medium as a kind of 'mental projector' and the phantoms as representations of her psychic reality. Visually the film explores the origins of what we think of as the virtual. While 20th century cinema can be described as a 'window onto another world'; the 19th century conceived of specters that could cross over into our own world." - Zoe Beloff

12 December - THE JANE GANG
"Strangled in the past, crippled in the present and terrorized into the future..." New York's own Jane Gang presents a selection of her Super 8 short films dated 1995-2000, including the NY premiere of her new HIS HOLY PREPUCE starring Patty Chang with sound by Elliott Sharp. Other films include: What's Convenient?, Christopher, Mark @ Danny's, Down the Tube, Inside Out, Fine Lines and Loose Change. "Enter here at your own risk, films can seriously damage your perception..."

19 December - NOTES FROM BOSTON COMMON
"I behold a boundless view, everything become Light, serene and joyfull." - Poimandres. Saul Levine, the dean of beantown filmmakers visits New York with a selection of his Super 8 Jewels, both new and old. Saul tells us that he'll be bringing some brand-new films, titles TBA. Saul will be on hand to discuss these latest fruits of his ongoing investigations in perception and sensibility in film.
