December - IN THE KINGDOM OF THE SHADOWS
In tonight's metaphysical double feature we pair Zoe Beloff's
brand-new 3D 16mm film SHADOWLAND OR LIGHT FROM THE OTHER
SIDE with one of its progenitors: episode two of Louis Feuillade's
FANTOMAS. "My on-going project is an investigation into the
relationship between imagination and moving image technology. SHADOWLAND
OR LIGHT FROM THE OTHER SIDE is based on the 1897 autobiography
of Elizabeth d'Espérance, a materializing medium who could
produce full body apparitions. It shows how one might think of a
medium as a kind of 'mental projector' and the phantoms as representations
of her psychic reality. Visually the film explores the origins of
what we think of as the virtual. While 20th century cinema can be
described as a 'window onto another world'; the 19th century conceived
of specters that could cross over into our own world." - Zoe Beloff

sound by Elliott Sharp. Other films include: What's Convenient?,
